Finding Freedom Through Sound: The Rise of DJ Pup Nightmare

From sobriety and self-discovery to hard techno and underground culture, DJ Pup Nightmare's journey is a reminder that music can become both an escape and a path toward authenticity.

Some artists spend years searching for the thing that makes them feel whole. For Phoenix-based DJ Pup Nightmare, that feeling arrived through hard techno, underground culture, and a community that encouraged authenticity over conformity.

By day, Pup Nightmare balances a full-time career while maintaining multiple creative pursuits. Nine years sober, he has built a life centered around personal growth, connection, and self-expression. More recently, that journey has led him behind the decks and into Arizona's underground electronic music scene.

Before stepping into DJ culture, Pup Nightmare had already found a sense of belonging through the global Pup Play community. While often misunderstood by outsiders, he describes the culture as something much larger than its stereotypes.

For many participants, it serves as a social outlet, a creative identity, and a way to disconnect from everyday pressures. Through the community, he has built friendships that span countries and continents, finding connections that transcend language, geography, and background.

The same feeling eventually drew him toward techno.

"Music allows me to disconnect," he explains. "It removes the negative parts of life and replaces them with freedom."

Although music has always been present in his life—raised on artists like Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beatles—his introduction to hard techno came later than most.

At 39 years old, a trip to Walter Where?House for a performance by 999999999 would become a defining moment.

What stuck with him wasn't just the music. It was the crowd.

A performance from local artist Lyzz-E left a lasting impression and ultimately became the catalyst that pushed him from attendee to aspiring DJ.

Today, Lyzz-E remains both mentor and inspiration, earning the affectionate title of his "DJ Dommy Mommy."

Like many new DJs, the journey began with a modest controller and curiosity.

A Pioneer FLX4, countless practice sessions, online courses, and hours spent experimenting eventually transformed casual interest into serious dedication.

What started as a hobby soon became something more.

Friends began encouraging him to take the craft seriously. They heard potential before he did.

Even now, Pup Nightmare remains humble about his abilities, describing himself as a newcomer still learning the fundamentals. Yet one thing is undeniable—the emotional connection he feels while mixing.

Beyond DJing, Pup Nightmare has become a recognizable face within Arizona's underground community.

His passion extends beyond performing and into creating spaces where people feel accepted, seen, and free to express themselves.

Whether through his involvement in the pup community or through nightlife events, the goal remains the same: connection.

When asked what makes a great community, his answer is simple.

Understanding. Connection. Courtesy.

Those values are reflected throughout his perspective on nightlife and culture.

He hopes to see greater acceptance of alternative forms of self-expression in music spaces while encouraging people to embrace individuality without fear of judgment.

For now, the focus remains simple: practice.

One set at a time.

One day at a time.

One step closer to mastering the craft.

Upcoming appearances include opening for Gravdgr in August and helping co-host another edition of Animal Control alongside Techno Snobs later this year.

Long-term, he dreams of performing at some of the world's most iconic kink and alternative culture gatherings, including Folsom Berlin and Darklands Festival in Antwerp.

But success, for Pup Nightmare, isn't measured in ticket sales or social media numbers.

It's much more personal.

It's the moment someone recognizes him from a set and simply says thank you.

It's confidence.

It's growth.

It's knowing he's exactly where he's supposed to be.

And if his journey so far is any indication, he's only getting started.

Sometimes I'm so overwhelmed by the feeling while mixing that I tear up. To me, it means I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be.
